Fourth in the Hand-Manipulated series for machine knitters, Open Spaces takes an in depth look at eyelets, ladders and slits, with an emphasis on contemporary applications. This is not your grandmother’s lace!

The Basics chapter reviews Bridging and Drop Stitch, both of which are used in many of the samples. Three individual chapters address the specifics of creating oversized and unusual openings in your knits. Sometimes these openings — eyelets, ladders and slits — are obvious parts of the design. Other times they play a supporting role, making specific textures or manipulations possible.

All of the samples were knitted on a 6.5 mm mid-gauge machine, but most will translate well to standard or chunky gauge. As always, the directions are generically written and suitable for any brand machine.

“What a wealth of information! This book introduces so many possibilities for machine knitters to manipulate stitches to create interesting textures and surface design. With clear charts and step-by-step photos, the stitches are all easy to recreate and can be combined in so many interesting ways. I love the modernity of the textures, which are in line with the innovative work that is being done industrially in Europe right now, and this book makes them accessible to machine knitters everywhere.”
-Trisha Malcolm, VP/Editorial Director Vogue Knitting Magazine
